Monday Quickie

I wanted to make something for a frame that I got on clearance at Joanns.  The frame was originally $50!  But, because it was missing the glass, I got it for $11.  And, remember those frames I got on clearance at hobby Lobby for $2.40?  Well, the glass from the one I didn't break fit perfectly.  I need to get some stuff up on the walls in our loft area and I came up with a modern silhouette of my little man using my Silhouette SD.  I am going to hang it in our loft area where all of his toys are.  I can't wait to come up with some more stuff!

Imperfectly Perfect

So, I have been in some serious need of wall art for the house.  I really suck at decorating a house and any wall art I seem to like is so expensive!  Plus, I usually change my mind from house to house on what I want on the walls. After seeing so many different things on various craft blogs, I decided to try to come up with something myself.  It's not perfect, but I like that it's not perfect!  And I'm happy that the only thing I actually purchased were 2 frames at $2.40/piece on clearance and some $5 spray paint and just used up some of the massive amounts of fabric I have in my house.  Here is what I did:

 2 identical frames on sale at Hobby Lobby.  I originally wanted to fix up the frames and use them for some photos that I have wanted to hang...but then I broke the glass in one of them, so I had to come up with something different.  What I ended up with was not my original vision for the project!

 White Spray paint

 Spray paint the frames (painting the grass is optional.  And remember to tell your husband you did paint the grass so he doesn't freak out that someone is tagging his lawn).

 Distress the frame with some sand paper leftover by the builders of your house.  Thanks Providence!

 Find some fabric  in the back of your closet that you bought 6 months ago from Wal-Mart for a failed duffle bag sewing project. Attach it to the cardboard backing of the frame with some Elmer's Adhesive Spray that you bought last summer and used once.

 Use your awesome Silhouette SD machine to cut out an image on Reynold's Freezer paper from Wal-Mart.  You can also use scissors or an exacto knife...this way is just faster.

 Iron the freezer paper onto the fabric and paint with some fabric paint.  Remove the stencil and you get...

Then hang it in the guest bathroom (I don't understand why the lighting sucks so bad taking a photo in there, but I tried to fix it so you could see it better).  I am going to do something similar with the other frame with some oars.  Since I hate painting and we never really live anywhere long enough to warrant the time and effort to paint, I've really wanted to make things with lots of colors in them.  I think I succeeded!

They can't all be perfect...

You probably wouldn't believe it, but I sat at my desk for 2 hours trying to figure out a birthday card for my 4 year old niece.  I really wanted to use my Silhouette machine and although this doesn't look very intricate (it's hard for me to tie a decent bow!), I came up with this!

I thought it came out pretty cute!  I then decided to stamp "happy birthday" on the inside so it had a greeting other than what I was going to write.  And then I ended up with this:

Oh well.  It's not like she can read anyways!

I was playing around a little more with my Silhouette machine and glass etching cream (so, that's what they're calling it these days?).  Anyhow, I have a lot of random glass candle holders/vases lying around and tried doing some silhouettes.  I mean, who wouldn't want a candle holder with the profiles of your family members on them??  Don't they "light" up your life??  Speaking of life, I should probably get one...  :)

Wreath and a Vase

Hey everyone!  I wanted to post a few projects that I got done today.  First, I started another yarn wreath last week and finally got around to finishing it today.  It's just been sitting around and I had been playing around with the flowers and where to put them.  I had a lot of flowers made, but ended up just going with something simple.  These are so fun and easy to make and the sky is the limit on what you want them to look like!  Here is what I came up with:

Also, I was SO excited today because I finally got a chance to play with my new Silhouette SD cutting machine!  I ordered it over a week ago and it got delivered last Friday.  I had a busy weekend and didn't end up getting to it until today.  I have seen people make so many great things with this little guy, that I just had to have it :)  My first project was a simple one (or so I thought).  Take a hurricane vase that I had and put a etch a design into it.  I ended up just going a simple letter "J."  It took me awhile to get the cut right on my machine, but I finally got it to work.  Once I finally got the right cut, it took me no more than 10 minutes to make the vase.  Once I get the hang of it a bit more, I have a few other ideas that I hope I can make work!
